There are various differences between a traditional school and a progressive one; each has its own pros and cons too. Michelle Dizon, who has been a guidance counselor in both types of school, discusses the points one by one.
Finding the best fit for your child will take a bit of time as well as a careful and constant assessment of his learning needs over the years. A child may be okay in a specific learning environment during his early school years, but as he grows older, his needs may evolve and change.
In his younger years, Chary Mercado sent her quiet son with a very structured way of thinking to a progressive school to get him out of his shell and give him opportunities to interact. Her daughter, who has a very strong personality, she sent to a traditional school so that the young lass might learn how to contain her willfulness and follow rules. Today, both are studying in a traditional high school. Chary says, “It is where they will develop strong individual and group work ethic and learn how to move within a big spectrum.”
Erika Sykat recently transferred her daughter to a progressive school, where her son also studies. She says, “I noticed the difference in how my daughter and son addressed everyday situations. My daughter thinks in a limited or ‘boxed’ way and my son, a more holistic manner.”
The choice of where to send your kids to school may be a bit overwhelming, but the good news is that you actually have a choice! As parents, it is important that we are intimately involved in our children’s education. Be open to feedback. Talk to your kids. Consult with their teachers. Should you be advised to move your child from one type of school to another, consider the transfer carefully and do what’s best for your child.
