There are moments in childhood that seem small while they’re happening.
A giggle fit that turns into uncontrollable laughter. A game of habulan that spills from one room to another. A rainy day filled with stories, imagination, and endless rounds of pretend play.
To parents, these moments can feel like ordinary parts of the day. But for children, they often become something much bigger: the happy memories they carry with them for years to come.
What is a “Reservoir of Joy” and why does it matter?
During a recent Mommy Mundo parenting talk, Gabby Limjoco, owner of Playworks Early Childhood Centers Inc. described emotional well-being as a “reservoir of joy,” a store of positive experiences and loving connections that help children feel secure, confident, and supported as they grow.

“Bonding creates a reservoir of joy. Para daw siyang bank. When you play together, you deposit happy memories into the bank of your child. These are good feelings that children can take away and draw from when life happens.”
The idea is supported by developmental research. Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child notes that responsive, back-and-forth interactions between children and caring adults help build the foundation for healthy brain development, emotional well-being, and social skills. These everyday moments of connection, whether through conversation, shared activities, or play, help shape the relationships and experiences children rely on as they grow.
One of the simplest ways to create those moments is through play.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play is essential to healthy child development. Through play, children develop creativity, confidence, imagination, and social skills. They learn to share, negotiate, resolve conflicts, and develop the resilience needed to face future challenges.
In practical terms: Every time a parent engages with their child through play, storytelling, or even a shared merienda, they are making a ‘deposit’ into their child’s emotional bank. Over time, these moments help children build the confidence, emotional security, and resilience they carry into everyday life.
These deposits do more than create happy memories. Over time, they help children feel safe, valued, and supported – building the confidence, emotional security, and sense of belonging that contribute to a happier childhood.
Why is Play so Important for Child Development?
Play also strengthens the bond between parent and child. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), joining children in play gives parents a unique opportunity to see the world from their child’s perspective while helping build enduring relationships. The AAP identifies play as essential to healthy child development across multiple domains:
- Creativity and imagination – Children learn to create, experiment, and think divergently through unstructured play.
- Social and emotional skills – Through play, children practice sharing, negotiating, and resolving conflicts.
- Confidence and resilience – Playful experiences help children develop the emotional strength to face future challenges.
- Parent-child bonding – The AAP notes that joining children in play gives parents a unique opportunity to see the world from their child’s perspective while helping build enduring relationships.
Together, these skills help children navigate everyday experiences with greater confidence, curiosity, and emotional well-being.
The good news for busy moms is that meaningful play does not require expensive toys, elaborate outings, or a perfectly planned weekend.
More often than not, it happens in the ordinary moments.

As Gabby Limjoco shared during the Mommy Mundo talk, “What children remember most is usually not that toy or grand activity. They remember who was with them.”
That can be reassuring for parents.
Meaningful moments are often created in the middle of ordinary days: a quick game before dinner, a dance party in the kitchen while preparing merienda, or a walk around the neighborhood.
These moments may seem simple to adults, but they often leave a lasting impression because they communicate something deeper than fun. They tell children, “I’m here with you.” And when children consistently feel supported and connected, they are more likely to develop the emotional security that underpins happiness and resilience
How do Happy Memories build Resilience in Children?
Beyond helping children feel loved and secure, these shared moments help build resilience. Over time, they become part of a child’s emotional foundation, helping them feel more secure in themselves and more capable of handling life’s ups and downs.

While lessons and organized activities have their place, experts continue to emphasize the importance of unstructured, child-led play, where children can exercise their imagination, explore their interests, and simply enjoy being kids. They encourage parents to prioritize consistent, everyday moments of connection over occasional grand gestures. A happy childhood is not built from a few extraordinary moments. It is built from many ordinary moments of connection repeated over time.
Some of the memories that stay with us the longest are not the grandest ones. They’re the little traditions, the inside jokes, and the afternoons that felt ordinary at the time. Years from now, your child may not remember every toy they received or every activity they attended, but they may remember the games you played together and the feeling of being loved and fully present in a moment.
Why do Small Rituals make Memories stronger?
Children experience memories through all their senses, that’s why small rituals can make those moments even more memorable. A favorite merienda after a day of outdoor play. A special treat during family game time. A familiar drink shared while talking about the day’s adventures.

For many Filipino families, a pack of CHUCKIE® chocolate milk drink after playtime can become part of the moments children associate with fun, comfort, and family togetherness
CHUCKIE®, the beloved chocolate milk drink from Nestlé Philippines, has been a staple merienda companion for Filipino kids for generations. Its familiar chocolatey taste is often associated with the carefree, happy moments of childhood – making it a natural part of the rituals that families create together.
Make the Most of Childhood. It Goes by Fast.
Childhood moves quickly. Faster than most parents expect.
The toys will eventually be outgrown. The games will become less frequent. But the happy memories created today can stay with children for years, becoming part of the reservoir of joy they carry into adulthood.
So the next time your child asks you to play, consider saying yes.
After all, minsan lang sila bata.
