Preparing Safe, Healthy Family Meals

Mealtimes present precious opportunities for families to strengthen their bond. It is at mealtimes, when every family member is relaxed in the glow of good food and company, that secret wishes are made known, petty differences are patched up, and exciting goals are pressed forward. There is constant pressure then for moms to prepare a good spread every mealtime, making sure that not only are the dishes delicious, but safe and healthy as well. Committing to good food preparation practices is the first step towards achieving this.

Because one cannot see, smell, or taste bacteria which may potentially cause illness, it is essential for moms and her helpers in the kitchen to be extra cautious when handling, cooking, and storing food.

For starters, hands must be washed often, 20 seconds before and after handling food. Kitchen surfaces must also be kept squeaky clean at all times. It goes without saying that pots, pans, knives, and utensils must be kept in pristine condition too.

When preparing food, keep raw meat, poultry, and fish away from each other; separate them from other food as well. Use a different set of cutting board and knife to work on meat, poultry, and fish. This practice is done to avoid cross-contamination.

Cook to the right temperature always. Raw beef and pork must be cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 145 °F (62.8 ºC), and chicken at 165 °F (73.9 °C). Of course, some moms may opt to cook at higher temperatures, and that’s fine.

A lot of recipes call for a measure of water in their preparation. When this happens, don’t just get water from the tap thinking that the cooking process will incinerate any germ or bacteria it may contain. All your efforts at handling food safely would be rendered moot by this one careless move.
