Insufficient glandular tissue (IGT) is a rare condition that is seen in less than 2% of women. In these women, the breasts did not develop the necessary glandular tissues for breast milk creation. The breasts are tubular in shape (narrow and long instead of more rounded), have more than 4 cm flat space between the breasts, have a very large and bulbous areola, with no observable breast changes (such as tenderness or enlargement) during pregnancy.

Since August is World Breastfeeding Month, it is more than fitting for nursing moms to celebrate and promote the importance and value of breastfeeding. And it is also necessary to educate new moms about breastfeeding as a contraceptive. We sat down with Dra. Avigail V. Lactating moms are often told that everything they eat turns into breastmilk. In a sense that is true. Whatever a mother ingests goes through her digestive system, and the nutrients of the ingested food and drink are absorbed by the blood and distributed throughout the body through the bloodstream. This is what helps fuel milk production; and so the nutrients the mother has taken in can now be passed on to the baby.
We’ve all heard the sentence tagged at the end of all the milk ads: “Breast Milk is best for babies up to two years.” Beyond just breast milk, though, it’s also breastfeeding itself that is best for babies. But why exactly? We sit down with Abbie Yabot, lactation and breastfeeding expert and coach, to learn the basics behind that well known statement.
Breastfeeding provides physical and emotional comfort to infants. Being able to suck while being held close, and–very often–with skin-to-skin contact, helps decrease anxiety, promote a sense of calm, and give a sense of happiness and security.
