Mind Your Mind: Enrich each moment

For the third month of Mommy Mundo’s #MindYourMind campaign, we’re looking at relationships and how we moms can take the time to enrich and make the most out of every moment we have with one of the key people in our lives: our spouses! The Into the Mom Mind survey revealed that 97% of moms list their relationship with their kids as most important. This is followed by the relationship with their husband.

That is why this month we are inviting all moms to take a pause so that we can #LevelUpLove.

We’ve now come to a whole new life routine. Where we initially may have been taking the time to speak to our spouses lengthily and meaningfully, and where we may have taken the chance to do the projects we’d been meaning to do with our children, a year and four months of quarantine has allowed us to adjust to a new lifestyle and workstyle, which may also mean new ways of letting key moments in our relationships slip by.

Let’s take the month to #LevelUpLove and find ways to mind our minds with our spouses. How can we make everyday activities, all the must-dos together that much more meaningful? Could we start a different type of lunch conversation? Is it time for everyone to learn how to cook? Or can you get control of your two left thumbs and play a video game? Whatever it may be, we’re encouraging moms to pause, process, and minding to make the everyday a little sweeter in small ways.

Quality in Overquantity

No other time in the last 100 years have couples had so much time together. It has been the years of quantity time, and with the adjustments made in work, the kids constantly being around, and almost every aspect of life blending inside the four walls of the home, it is all too easy to forget who we are with and why they are wonderful.

It’s also easy to forget to be wonderful to them! And that’s the challenge of the month! Let’s start putting quality back in all of this overquantity. Here are some fun ideas for you and your spouse!

1. Mindful Conversations. Leave your phones, turn off the telly, and make sure your kids won’t interrupt at all! Then talk to each other the way you used to; touching up on your dreams, how far you’ve come, and where you both still plan on going together and side by side. Make this a regular practice. Find time each week where you have zero technology around you, and you ask each other the kind of questions you asked when you were dating.

If you’re not sure where to start, head over to Mommy Mundo’s Instagram account and play our CoupleConvo Starters!

2. Identify your triggers. Marriage is a long business, they say, and as in all things there will be misunderstandings along the way. Pause and think about what your spouse does that truly irks you. Think about why it affects you so much. What is it about the behaviour that upsets you, and where could the feeling be stemming from? Perhaps there was something that happened in your history that is the root of why this behaviour is upsetting. Process why you may be reacting, and actively think of how you can react towards your spouse more positively.

3. It’s always mind over matter. To quote Eckhart Tolle, “If you find your here and now intolerable and it makes you unhappy, you have three options: remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it totally.”  As we pause and mind our minds, we are very likely to see that so many of what may annoy us or frustrate us can change completely by just changing our perspective. Choosing to make positive changes in our own selves and choosing acceptance and grace over the things that cannot be changed can make a world of difference in our closest relationships.

4. Celebrate your love! How can you cherish each other a little bit everyday? How can you remind each other of all the reasons why you fell in love? Make your little routines sweeter and more special by adding your own unique flavour and your little inside jokes. It will keep you both smiling and remembering your love!

No perfect couples

In a world of Instagram and #couplegoals it can be easy to get caught up in how you want to be or wish you could be over how and who you are. When scrolling and feeling little comparisons creep into your head, put the phone down and focus on your spouse. What makes them incomparable? Make a list and recite aloud why you are grateful for each of these traits. Remember, no couple is perfect, but if you work together, you can accomplish plenty of things perfectly.
