Whether you are the outdoorsy type that likes taking your children on adventures, have a strict vacation routine, or are stuck at home due to a global pandemic, First-Aid is a must-know for moms. You really never know when you’re going to need the skills. That’s why Foskina teamed up with First Aid for Kids PH and MommyMundo for a unique webinar on first-aid.
Hosted by Rachel Kelly Davis and presented by Doctor Theresa Joy Sto. Domingo, an Emergency Medicine Specialist who sits as the Chairwoman of VRP Emergency Medicine Specialists, is an American Heart Association Certified Provider for Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Life Support, and is the Chairwoman of the VRP Emergency Medicine Consultants. The class covered a lot of first-aid basics that many moms need to know during this time of constantly being home.
Following the extensive presentation, Dr. Sto Domingo answered questions of the mom participants. Some questions and lessons that caught a lot of attention included:
-
Do you keep a wound closed or opened so it heals faster?
Answer: CLOSED!
-
What is the best ointment to use on skin wounds and bug bites that develop into tiny little open wounds?
Answer: Topical anti-bacterial ointments like Foskina are idea for bug bites, eczema, burns, and infections.
-
Should you pop a blister?
Answer: NEVER!
-
How do you clean wounds?
Answer: With soap and water. Make sure the water is running so that bacteria and dirt get washed away. Never use hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or iodine for wound cleaning.
-
What to do if the baby falls off the bed?
Answer: Check for signs of disorientation and abnormal behaviour. Check for a bump on the head. Call your pediatrician and do not let the baby sleep for an hour or two.
-
Should you apply butter or grease to a burn?
Answer: NEVER! It is best to run water over a burn, apply a topical ointment or burn cream, and then cover with a bandage.
For some of the must-knows of the session, we’ve put together a gallery of images, which include how to build your first-aid kit at home!
The adage “better safe than sorry” rings very true for mothers and first-aid. It’s always best to be prepared and know what to do, rather than just rely on Google or a pediatrician (while many pediatricians are available 24/7, you also can’t predict when they might have other items that need their attention.)
