Remote learning reminded us parents, that we have an invaluable role in the education of our children. For many years, a lot of us turned over the role of educating our children to schools. With the remote learning set-up, we suddenly have to step-up. All of a sudden, your home is now the school. Yes, it was a lot of responsibility but we made it!
Fourteen months after the first announcement of a quarantine and most Philippine parents have at least twelve months of homeschooling, e-learning, or blended learning under their belts. Mommy Mundo spoke to parents on their chosen methods of education for their children and how they have pivoted and coped.
In your children’s current set-up of distance learning, self-learning is an important skill to develop. Self-learning is when your children grasp and understand concepts, put their lessons into practice to solve a problem, and retain information—all on their own.
As most parents in 2020 know, homeschooling can be a challenge, especially if your children are younger and are yet to learn the discipline for school. There is only so much a toddler or early elementary child can take of colouring, letters and writing, basic numbers and math, science, and a second language class. Sometimes both you and your child will need a break from academics and go back to being just parent-and-child instead of parent-also-teacher-and-child, and one great way to do that without losing out on the academics is to play board games!
The new normal is a pivotal moment for children at home. How parents respond to the changes in their household will greatly affect their children’s lives forever. The prolonged home quarantine allowed parents and children to bond together, get to know more about each other, be involved in one another’s activities, and rediscover their relationship as they spend more time at home.
This September Mommy Mundo continues its partnership with PLDT Home Fibr to bring moms more educational webinars that aim to aid their homeschooling journey as they #RediscoverLearning at home. On September 16th, the two companies joined with 88Tuition of Singapore, an online enrichment platform that focuses on supplementing a child’s learning while providing activities that allow parents and children to bond.
As part of the conference, Mommy Mundo teamed up with PLDT Home Fibr to give a special talk, titled Nurturing Our Learners. The discussion, hosted and moderated by Riki Flores, centred on the presentations of Teachers Ani Almario and Tina Zamora. Good friends and co-authors of a new book on progressive education titled School is Life, Ani Almario and Tina Zamora both founded schools.
In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic more parents might want to do their research and seriously consider it. Many schools have been forced to transition to online learning in the past few months of the school year, and the upcoming school year is going to be conducted online for many students.
