Choosing a Preschool Checklist

toddlerbooks.jpg

Mommy Mundo’s Preschool Fair happens this Saturday, February 4, 2017, at Top Shelf in Fully Booked, Bonifacio Global City. With some of the metro’s premiere preschools gathered in one roof, it is the best time for parents to have a look and feel of the learning institution most suitable for their children. The participating educational organizations include Britesparks International School, Cambridge Child Development Centre – BHS, Clayton Learning Center, Homeschool Global, Integrow, International Center for Beginning Beginners (ICBB), Kids Playlab Preschool, Little Archers Learning Center, MindChamps International Preschool, Playworks Early Childhood Center, and University of Asia & The Pacific – Child Development and Education Center (UA&P CDE).

But what does one look for in a preschool? Here are some of the factors which you might want to consider as you go around the booths of the participating schools at Mommy Mundo’s Preschool Fair.

Find out the school’s educational philosophy. There are different educational models being followed by modern learning institutions, from the Montessori Method to the Waldorf approach. Some preschools give play a priority while others go heavy on reading and math. It might be a good idea to read up on different educational philosophies, so that you can quiz the school administrators about how they approach learning during the fair.

Get an idea of what the school looks like. Of course, the best route is to visit the school with your child. But during the fair, check out photos of the school either from their brochures or their website. Look at the classroom layout. Are the classrooms cheerful or glum? Are the walls filled with artwork? Find out what facilities are available, where they are located, and whether they are child-friendly.

Evaluate the caliber of the staff and teachers. Ask about their educational backgrounds along with how they are trained. If there are teachers present during the fair, it would be nice to have a chat with them to get a feel of how they are. Remember that these are the persons who would be guiding your child in their journey to learning. You must be absolutely secure with regards to their character and qualifications.

Check out the class size. The teacher-child ratio is important specially for preschoolers who need more care and attention than older children. What is the teacher-child ratio? Is there a teacher for every three, four, or five kids? Which ratio will you be comfortable at?

Take a look at the school schedules. Ask the teachers and administrators to give you an idea of the tasks and activities that your child will be doing during his stay in school. Find out if there are hands-on, experiential activities. Check out how much time is devoted towards reading readiness and how much is given to active and imaginative play. It might be good to know as well whether there is a balance between individual and group activities.

These are just some of the factors which you might want to consider when choosing the right preschool for your child.
