It all starts with the grocery list. You will eat what you buy, and if you buy healthy then you will eat healthy. Yes, this can still be a challenge, but here are some easy switches you can make as early as your next run to the supermarket.

What I did get to do on those long sleepless nights when I worried about my baby in the NICU was read up on preemies: what to expect, what red flags to watch out for, and what support groups I can go to for help. I also cherished the late-night conversations I had with mommy friends who also had preemies who told me about their experience in raising a preemie baby.

Why do Babies Need Sunlight?

The usual recommendation is 15-30 minutes a day between the hours of 7am and 9am, or early morning sun. Parents are asked to cover the child’s eyes (to prevent exposure to UV rays), cover the child’s genital area (also for UV protection), and to sun both front and back of the child. But why is this a recommended practice? Why is sunlight good for babies?

First Trimester:

Protein: Eggs, tofu, legumes
Folate: Citrus, spinach, broccoli
Bland snacks: Crackers, bananas, nuts
Hydration: Coconut water, clear soups

Second Trimester:

Iron: Lean meat, leafy greens, beans
Calcium: Yogurt, cheese, fortified milk
Healthy fats: Avocado, nuts, olive oil
Vitamin C: Mango, strawberries, bell peppers

Third Trimester

Omega-3s: Salmon, chia seeds, walnuts
Carbs: Brown rice, oats, sweet potatoes
