Tired of watching animated features and action hero reboots? Well, why not explore a different form of entertainment that’s fit for the whole family? Why not take them to the ballet? For Ballet Manila’s 20th season, the company draws inspiration from beloved literary classics in “From Page to Stage,” a terpsichorean celebration of tales and tomes including Romeo and Juliet, Pinocchio, and Hansel and Gretel. Watch enchanting tales of love, fantasy, and adventure. See larger than life characters from bedtime stories dance their way into our children’s hearts.
This milestone season starts off with Severino Reyes’ “Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang,” which goes onstage at the Aliw Theater on August 21, 22, 28, and 29, at 8PM and August 23 and 30 at 3PM.
“Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang” features three distinct stories: a princess’ love for a bird, a hero in search of his sisters, and the mystery behind an enchanted violin. “Ang Prinsipeng Mga Ibon” is a classic story of a princess fighting for love amidst her father’s disapproval. It is choreographed by Osias Barroso with musical arrangement by Mon Faustino.
“Ang Kapatid ng Tatlong Marya” takes a look at a young hero’s search for his three bewitched sisters. The performance, with tinges of the comedic, is choreographed by Ballet Manila Artistic Director Lisa Macuja-Elizalde with original music by Joey Ayala.
“Ang Mahiwagang Biyulin” explores the mystery behind a mystical violin with choreography by Tony Fabella and music by Ryan Cayabyab.
Up next is Paul Vasterling’s “Romeo and Juliet.” This is going to be the Asian premiere of this heartbreakingly tragic romance as interpreted by Nashville Ballet USA Artistic Director and CEO Paul Vasterling. This is definitely a must-see as the Manila Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor Maestro Alexander Vikulov of the Mariinsky Theater sets the music for this passionate romance. “Romeo & Juliet” goes onstage at the Aliw Theater on October 2 and 3 at 8PM, and October 4 at 3PM.
