The holidays can be one of the most destructive times of year for the skin. Between the all the festive–and often fatty or sugar filled–food, the drinking, and the late nights, it won’t be too long before you feel the stress of it in your system and see the stress of it on your skin. Whether you’re in the full swing of things or if you are trying to wind down, here are some quick skin care tips that will keep you radiant and glowing throughout the season!
-
HYDRATE!
More than anything, and not just for the holidays, hydrate! Drinking plenty of water can help flush out toxins, keep your skin moisturized from the inside out, and just be a great help to your overall health. The more you hydrate, the better you will look and feel!
-
CLEANSE
When a lot is going on, one of the most important things you can do is cleanse! Be sure you remove all your makeup before going to bed, and follow a skin care ritual to help with the extra care it needs. Use a serum or night cream that has a light acid (glycolic acid or azelaic acid are two examples) to help even the skin tone from dark spots, resurface rough areas, and keep your skin glowing!
-
SKIP THE SUGAR
As much as we love sugar, and as abundant as sugar is over the holidays, the truth is that sugar destroys the skin! It wreaks havoc on the body to boot! In terms of the skin, however, sugar can accelerate skin aging by preventing elastin and collagen from doing their jobs, which basically means you’re going to look older and more wrinkled sooner rather than later… Are you skipping the cake this year? 😉
-
TONE DOWN THE ALCOHOL
Alcohol, hard liquor in particular, can produce free radicals in your body that damage the cells–skin cells included! Over the holidays, try getting yourself down to a glass or two at most. If you can, opt for wine. Red wine has antioxidants that can actually be good for he skin in small amounts. Take it one step further and opt for a wine spritzer, which dilutes the wine further, and keeps you hydrated!
-
SLEEP
Our skin regenerates, rebuilds, and restores all while we sleep. To put very simply: the more sleep you get, the better for your skin. This is something you will especially see once you pass that 3-0 birthday! So while the occasional late night over the holidays is warranted, be sure to sleep more than you skip!
