In a two-part web series produced by PLDT & Mommy Mundo, the basics of everyday health were tackled, giving special consideration to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and how it may be affecting our health now or how it may affect our health in the future. Health care and education are the pinnacle of family life during this quarantine time, and through the series, doctors and celebrity moms hoped to encourage parents to turn the situation into quality time.
The first session centred on children’s nutrition where Dr. Gellina Suderio-Maala, MD. and celebrity mom, Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez talked about how the best way to #stayhealthy as we all #stayhome is really to go back to the basics of having proper diets. Dr. Suderio-Maala tackled the daily recommended intakes of various healthy foods and the nutrients they provide both our children and us parents.
An open session of questions and answers took place after the presentation, and parents were able to ask after their concerns, such as: are supplements important?; how does one identify nutrient deficiency?; and what are the potential long term effects of canned food. The session, still available on Mommy Mundo’s Live Facebook Videos continued to be watched even after it streamed, and reached over 140,000 parents in under a week.
Session two tackled ‘The Germ Code’ where celebrity mom, Riki Flores-Reyes and Dr. Andrea Carag talked about how germs enter our bodies and how they can make us sick. As many have consistently have reminded during this time: proper handwashing is an important key to defending the human body against germs, which can be anywhere and on any surface. Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces also come with this territory.
Like the first session, the open question segment sparked a lively discussion for both speakers. One of the key takeaways from the discussion was to let slight fevers run its course, and–while parents do need to talk to their pediatricians–recognising that a fever is part of the body’s defense system is important understanding. Just because a fever is present doesn’t immediately mean medicines, such as antibiotics are needed, and if antibiotics are taken, then following the schedule given by the doctors (even if one already feels better) is absolutely necessary. This session is also on Mommy Mundo’s Facebook Live Videos.
As we all continue to #stayhome, Mommy Mundo will continue to present helpful free webinars for parents and kids to #stayhealthy. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates on the schedules of webinars!
