On May 23, 2020, Saturday, Mommy Mundo held its first PedTalk. Short for “pediatrician” talks and done in collaboration with Sanofi Philippines, one of the leading healthcare solutions providers in the country, the series of health-focused webinars aims to help facilitate parent and doctor discussions during this time of quarantine. Recognising that many parents need access to doctors, but are currently challenged due to community quarantines, the web presentation is a chance for parents to ask their questions, connect with other parents, and receive the assurance they may need directly from experts.
Co-sponsored by Huggies and UV Care, the first session was hosted by Camille Prats Yambao along with Dra. Nerissa Dando, a pediatrician with specialties in pediatric emergencies. The session was viewed by over 8,000 mommies, allowed to ask questions in real-time, and were answered Dra. Dando following her brief presentation on healthcare emergencies.
Some essentials we have listed down include:
When administering medicines at home:
-
Only give medicine your pediatrician has recommended for your child
-
Always check the expiration date
-
Strictly follow the recommendations on the box, matching the correct dosage to your child’s age
-
Store and dispose of medicine properly
What to do when you child is needs first aid and you cannot reach your doctor:
-
If you are dealing with a fever: Give paracetamol, following the instructions on the box
-
If you are dealing with an allergy: Give antihistamines, following the instructions on the box (ideally previously prescribed by your doctor)
-
If dealing with diarrhea or vomiting: Give oral rehydration salts
-
If dealing with an asthma attack: Administer the medicines and method prescribed by your doctor
-
If dealing with a child that might have ingested a poisonous substance: Do not induce vomiting, bring any medicine your child might be taking and the suspected poison to the hospital, and call the Poison Center at 028-554-8400 or 0966-7189904 or 0922-8961541
-
If dealing with a child who is having a seizure: Lay your child on the floor with the head turned to one side and call for immediate emergency help. Stay with the child until help arrives.
-
If dealing with a child who has been seriously injured: Do not move the child unless there is immediate danger and call for immediate emergency help. Stay with the child until help arrives.
More than learning basics and being prepared should emergencies happen, mommies were able to connect with each other and realise the importance of staying educated and ready. Sometimes, those moments you take to Google an answer while an emergency is taking place are the precious moments you need to make a difference in the situation.
Mommies were also reminded that—as the saying goes—an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Keeping your child on track with their vaccinations, their health and wellness check ups (many doctors have taken to Viber given the current situation), and giving them quality food that is paired with ample daily exercise is still one of the best ways to keep our children healthy.
Each free PedTalk webinar is hosted on Facebook Live, and will tackle topics on physical and emotional health and child development.
