Living in the Philippines in 2020 means having spent eight months in quarantine (at least at the time of this writing). Eight months. The country holds the record for the longest quarantine–often called lockdown–in the world. And it has definitely taken its toll. Sources have shown that “just two weeks in quarantine can lead to anger, depression, and PTSD;” problems not to be swept under the rug.
Now, imagine being a new mother in this situation. There is already a significant amount of stress and anxiety that comes with having a baby. Additional stress and anxiety from being under quarantine due to a global pandemic can really send one exploring emotions never felt before. It is at this time, more than ever, that mothers need to practice self-care, both for themselves and for their children.
Self-care, like many good habits, is always easier said than done, but taking time for activities that nurture your emotional well-being and ease both your mental and physical stress is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. There are some go-to self-care activities that everyone is familiar with, such as:
-
Exercise
-
Meditation
-
Breathing
-
Pampering (ex. Taking a long soothing bath.)
-
Unplugging / Disconnecting (i.e. Going gadget free for a weekend.)
Any of the above self-care practices gives you a chance to reconnect with yourself and your body, attending to your basic needs. Each one also releases endorphins, making you feel relaxed and more at ease. They’re small acts of self-love, but they go a long way.
Other self-care activities that are also frequently mentioned, but less straightforward include:
-
Connecting with a friend
-
Cleaning out your closet
-
Playing with music (ex. Creating the perfect dinner party playlist.)
-
Journaling
Where the first set of activities were all inward, in a sense, this next set of activities all have an outward aspect. Each one requires action, and each action is therapeutic. Connecting with a friend can undoubtedly lift your spirits, just as decluttering your home can put your mind at ease and make you feel renewed. Creating playlists gives you a chance to channel some of your creativity, while journaling allows you to process your thoughts and feelings.
Each of these activities can easily be done from home, while still under quarantine, and are easy enough to do in between your newfound mommy duties. Even just trying one different one each week will take you through two months of quarantine already. Once you find one or two you truly enjoy, stick to them!
Remember, no matter the situation, taking care of your emotional and mental health is incredibly important. When considering self-care options during quarantine, try to create and set a routine that you can follow even when quarantine is lifted. That way, it is a habit you need not change and can always rely on to help soothe your nerves and show yourself some self-love.
